Women of Rock N Roll: Gen-X Alternative Edition

They never tell you what you need to know.

Remember these bands/artists? I'm guessing most of these women featured are in their mid 50s to early 60s today, and most of them probably don't shave their armpits, but back in the 90s these were some pretty solid songs from the Alternative genre. Totally forgot about all of these artists until Howard Stern played a clip in his opening segment from Veruca Salt and a few months later Tracy Bonham. I went to Youtube and then fell down a rabbit hole. Here's what I came up with.

What female songs/artists do you remember from that era?

PJ Harvey - Down By The Water youtube.com

Tracy Bonham - Mother Mother youtube.com

Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls youtube.com

Bjork - Army of Me youtube.com

Garbage - Androgyny youtube.com (who would of thought they were 20 years ahead of their time)

Courtney Love and her band, Hole, is another one from that era.

That Veruca Salt song is awesome. I love the Lithium station on satellite radio.

The Breeders - Cannonball

Meredith Brooks - Bitch

Alannis Morisette - pretty much anything from Jagged Little Pill

The 90s had some pretty great chick rock. But my favorite was The Cranberries - Zombie. I still crank that up every time I hear it.

Although... I think Miley Cyrus was born a couple decades too late. She could have been a 90s alt rock queen. When I saw that she was doing a song with the guys from Pearl Jam and Soundgarden for a Chris Cornell tribute, I checked it out just to piss myself off; I knew it'd be terrible. Only thing is....it wasn't. She did Say Hello To Heaven and damn that girl has some pipes. I was impressed.

And sort of off topic because it's not 90s chick rockers, but I'd you want to hear some bad ass covers of 90s rock songs, check out the covers done by Aaron Lewis from Staind and Corey Taylor from Slipknot. Ho-ly shit. Those dudes put 90s rock on a pedestal and do it justice..

Some of the other lesser-known names but recognizable songs

Elastica - Connection youtu.be

Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye youtu.be

Plus Sonic Youth, L7, and....fuck...I can't remember the name but the singer's voice is really breathy, like the actress Joey Lauren Adams

First time I heard Evanescence - Bring Me to Life, I thought it was Ms. Tori Amos rocking out with Linkin Park.

Really liked Sinead O'Connor's cover of Nothing Compares...and then I hear Chris Cornell's version.

Maybe the biggest one nobody's mentioned so far: No Doubt. When Tragic Kingdom came out when I was in 9th or 10th grade, I had a massive crush on Gwen Stefani. My buddy waa partial tobNatalie Imbruglia.

Sheryl Crowe was huge in the 90's and that was probably her best decade of music in her whole career.

I'm surprised no one said Fiona Apple yet.

How about the chick metal band Drain STH? Okay, they were a gimmick and never got huge. youtu.be

I saw Sonic Youth at The Outhouse in Lawrence KS back in the day. It was a punk rock club before it was a strip club. I fell in love with Kim Gordon that night.

Pink and Gwen Stefani. They both began in the 90s, although Pink in particular peaked in early '00s.

Joan Jett peaked in the late 70s and early 80s as some weird kind of pop punk lite. She may have been releasing nostalgia albums in the 90s, but she was definitely not part of that scene.

Patty Smyth's peak was between the mid 1980s and 1990s. Belinda Carlisle is only a year younger than Smyth. Sheryl Crow is 60.

And all of their careers more-or-less peaked in the GenX time frame.

Ishmael is right about Sheryl Crow BUT, since she peaked in the late 90s (I remember 'cause I was in college), she qualifies for the original topic of this conversation akthough was more easy listening than alternative.

I have no fucking clue who Belinda Carlisle or Patty Smithe are.

The tittle of the thread says GEN X rocker girls. Why are you boomers posting boomer girl singers that nobody has ever heard of. You guys have bad reading comprehension.
