Taiwan has long operated independently of Beijing. If the US does not defend it, who keeps world peace? How can the US keep the peace between nuclear armed Pakistan and India, or anywhere else.

@SJG, this is how a friend with an international relations degree described it.

China sees Taiwan as part of itself. Xi Jinping needs nationalist fervor and economic growth to keep a lid on social dissent. So he's going to keep blustering.

But China wants Taiwan as a whole, Taiwan Semiconductor, all the economy intact. And Taiwan is willing to scorch the earth not to reunite. That means China is going to hold off until they're confident they can take the head off the government and keep everything intact. That might be a few years.

That makes sense. Sounds like something similar is going on with Ukraine.

But I don't think we can depend on these super powers holding off. Things can happen when leaders play to nationalist fervor, and here in the US too.

Ukraine doesn't have a natural barrier like Taiwan does, so invading is easier.

I don't see a lot of nationalist fervor right now. Last time was the Iraq invasion in 2003. There's no appetite for another foreign conflict, and thankfully "make the world safe for democracy" can been well and scuttled.

To me at least, in both scenarios it is led by people trying to improve their reputation by conquest.

If the US and its allies don't respond adequately it will open the door to disaster.

My statement was in response to your claim that we have military commitments all over the globe, and the implication that there's a problem with this. I believe that we need to stand for not allowing aggressors to be able to change borders by using military force, so of course we need to support the Ukraine and Taiwan, but more importantly we need to stop Mr. Putin before his ambitions start a third world war, I don't think the Chinese are really feeling up to the task of conquering Taiwan, that would be a bloody conflict and I don't believe Xi has the stomach for that at this point, that might change at some time in the future but I don't think it will happen anytime soon.

No, I do not think there is a problem with us having military commitments all over the globe. But it does mean that now we need to act. Yes, so we need to support Ukraine and Taiwan, so we are in agreement. And yes, we need to stop Putin.

It is reasonable that Putin is concerned about the expansion of NATO and, possibly, into Ukraine. The solution seems straightforward, though: The US guarantees that Ukraine will never be admitted into NATO in exchange for Putin guaranteeing that Russia will never invade Ukraine.

All that being, it is not a big deal if Ukraine is lost: they are a complete basket-case of a country. Putin has the stronger will and interests in this case, so if he wants it, it's his.

@SJG countries need the unanimous agreement of existing members to be admitted to NATO. Thus the US has veto power by this alone. Now I am sure that they would not want to be the "odd man out" but they, no doubt, have lots of power to influence other members to also go their way regarding any membership decision.

As for it being a basket case: just look at its GDP/capita. The country is also riddled with corruption, although, on the plus side, this means it's GDP/capita is understating the wealth somewhat since so much is in its underground economy.

Well, I guess then that is not really the policy of the US to use that veto.

Well the USSR recognized the independence of the Ukraine. And so the US should still uphold this.

How do you feel about the idea that NATO should be dissolved?

I for one have long had a question about NATO expanding, and especially with the disbandment of the Warsaw Pact.

And NATO was originally proposed in the closing days of WWII as, "Christian West". It was always a means of perpetuating the Nazi Party and war against the Soviet Union.

And I know it was the 3 Baltic States, demanding independence, that destabilized Gorbachev. I have always had concerns about them. They only had national sovereignty during the between the wars period, and that was because Western powers wanted to weaken the Bolsheviks. Hebert Hoover was a big part of this.

This is after all still basically the Czar's Empire, which the Bosheviks, and now the Russian Federation are trying to hold on to.

There was a strong Nazi component in the 3 Baltic States, in Belarus, in the Ukraine, and in Hungary. There were Nazi SS aligned groups like Arrow Cross and Vlasov Army, and also Nazi aligned groups in Poland.

And it was Vice President Richard Nixon who was bringing holocaust perpetrators into this country under the Republican Ethic Outreach Organization. It was to "counter the Jewish vote" in the big cities.

Letting the Berlin Wall down, letting Germany re-unify, and the disbanding the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Control were positive, but there was also a problem exposed, that elements in all of these countries had fought on the Nazi side.

The Bolsheviks took over an empire which had cracks in it. And then anti-Communism has exacerbated this.

But most countries do have these kinds of internal fishers. This country certainly does.

Is the best thing to do now to disband NATO, and will this solve the problems?

But at this point, I think the situation has further escalated. Biden is saying that Putin planed to fake an attack from the Ukraine, and to show videos of bodies and blown up vehicles, and then to attack.

Hitler did that to Poland, 9/1/1939. They got Oscar Schindler to steal Polish army uniforms and then dressed a bunch of concentration camp inmates in them and machine gunned them.

At this point I feel that a land war could be inevitable.

Watch to see if Biden calls up reserves. They need the people with special technical skills, like helicopter maintenance. This all could be really bad.

There is literaly no comparison between the imaginary "Ukraine crisis" and the China-Taiwan situation.

First off Russia is more or less a western free market democracy. China is literally a de jure Communist dictatorship. Putting aside the fact that Russia has zero interest in Ukraine other than protecting the Russian citizens in the Donbas, Taiwanese current way of life would be completely transformed under a Communist Chinese government which claims a right to rule Taiwan. Russia has never expressed any interest in Ukraine besides Crimea which is now a fully incorporated part of Russia after the Crimea people overwhelmingly voted to rejoin Russia. The "western" media and regimes literally lie to you about Russia and make false analogies with Taiwan. Stop being idiots.

China operates under state capitalism. In terms of free market they are to the right of where American progressives would like us to be.

Dave and rdig, we can't just sit idly by and watch Russia overrun Ukraine. That would destroy the peace and stability throughout Europe.

I think the Taiwan situation is more touchy because China has never acknowledged the independence of Taiwan. I relate the two situations because they are both places where war could break out with a strategic nuclear armed super power.
