Somehow I knew what this was about even before I opened this topic and clicked on the link. I saw something about it earlier today.
I hate the Steelers but Villanueva already had my respect when he went against the grain a couple years ago and stood for the Star Spangled Banner while his team hid in the locker room and he gained more respect for this.

I absolutely love it. Hopefully the courage that Villanuevo demonstrated in doing the right thing encourages others to speak up.

There is no redemption. The players, owners, and media have chosen their fate. I'll never watch again. I feel sorry for the players who spent years trying to make it and are supporting what's decent and moral, but they are nothing more than collateral damage of the socialist revolution going on in this country. We are all victims of societal degeneration. Join the club fellas. And fuck all the millionaire athletes promoting this bullshit.

MisterOrange - did you read the article that DoctorEvil linked to? If not, I recommend you do so. Whether or not you watch football again, it's good to see what Alejandro Villanuevo did.

I don't give them much credit - reading the article it seems per the players on the team, there a was a vote taken and per the vote then everyone on the team was to wear the name of a young black man shot by police (Antwon Rose Jr) - the NFL and it's players are all woke-ho about players being able to express themselves w.r.t. social topics but it seems that only applies to one and only one viewpoint (e.g. Drew Brees) - Villanueva decided to honor Alwyn Cashe who was a Black US Army sergeant who served in Iraq and died of injuries he sustained while on tour there (Cashe was burned over 72 percent of his body while trying to rescue his fellow soldiers from a burning Bradley Fighting Vehicle) - from what I can see Alwyn Cashe was more than worthy of being honored by it doesn't seem Steelers players saw it the same way:

"...Team captain and defensive tackle Cameron Heyward was unaware that Villanueva was going to do that ... ..“Honestly, I was unaware of it,” Heyward told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Wednesday morning. “We had discussed it before and it was brought up to us. That is for him to comment on in the future. I’m not going to sit up here and speak for him. He’s his own man and we’ll move forward.” ..."

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of honoring a vet that was burned over 70% of his body and died while trying to save his fellow soldier.

As I've posted in the past, the left/Libs are the most "open minded" people in the world as long as you agree with them in every way - for the left, "democracy" means your entitled to think and do as you wish as long as it's completely in line w/ what they believe - and so goes for professional athletes that claim they are all for self expression (Kaepernick) but that's only if your expressing their believes and only their believes.

How much of what is happening in the NFL is because of peer pressure? Drew Brees apologized when there was absolutely no reason for him to do so.

Hope is not a strategy, but hopefully Villanueva just set an example. Only time will tell. But the man deserves respect. (As does the man that he honored)

Back in 2016 when that BLM-inspired black-guy shot 14 Dallas police officers of whom 5 died, the Dallas Cowboys wanted to honor the fallen officers by putting something on their helmets but the NFL did not allow them b/c the NFL had always had a policy of not allowing players' uniforms to be altered in any way and that was the end of that - the NBA had a similar stance and a few weeks later a young AA girl was gonna sing the national anthem b/f the game and she wanted to sing the anthem while wearing a shirt with Michael Brown's picture (black teenager shot by police in Ferguson) - due to the NBA's rules at the time she wasn't allowed to wear the shirt but immediately after LeBron James and other NBA players complained and Adam Silver immediately got on his knees and said that yeah she should have been allowed to wear the shirt even though it was against the NBA rules at the time.

lmao. Wow. So this guy Antwon Rose that the rest of the Steeler's are honoring was killed by police because he tried to flee arrest for doing a drive-by shooting. The black community should be honoring that cop for taking a psycho off the street.

What the NFL is doing is incredibly stupid. Ther are bowing to the demands of terrorists and thugs because they think that doing so is in their best interest as a business.

They believe the hollow threats of the players.

But realistically - what is the end game here? The NFL isn’t in a position to change police training or policy. And as Yahtzee just mentioned, a lot of the people being honored are thugs that society is better off without.

Meanwhile TV viewership is down for week 1 games across the league and the current TV contracts are nearing expiration.

I can only "assume" that the NFL is "looking towards the future" and thinking/believing that most young people are down with the social justice fake-narrative and that the wokers will be their future customers

This is exactly how the media manipulates sheep. The team had no issue with Villanueva supporting another victim of racial equality. Mike tomlin knew of Villanueva's decision and supported him. So, the team supports Villanueva, the coach supports Villanueva, but this is a negative how? The media can't divide a populace that hasn't already decided to hate each other for dumbass reasons.

"... A second Pittsburgh Steelers player has opted against displaying the name of a police shooting victim on his helmet after admitting he was “unaware of the whole story surrounding [the victim’s] death.” ... Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey posted a note on Instagram on Thursday saying he would no longer display Antwon Rose Jr.’s name on his helmet. Pouncey also offered an apologetic explanation to police departments and officers he has worked with for “not doing more investigating” before wearing Rose’s name during a Monday night game ..."
