When he first met her she was coming down stairs from her residence. He showed her an art book with an entry about himself and told her he was going to make her famous. He took her to lunch, then the next day he painted her.
In a book I read it said that the girl was one who was "more than happy to give herself to any man who would buy her dinner." Sounds like a cool place and time.
This has always been controversial. It is actually a posed scene, the people are known. But what people object to is just how despondent the woman looks, and at how the man does not seem to be paying any attention to her.
To my view, it is often just like this in dive strip clubs.
