Back when I was more involved in the escort scene, BP was the place I would go to find diamonds in the rough.
New girls just starting out in the biz at entry level rates, but who had the looks and talent to charge higher rates if they wanted to. It took a little extra work to find good ones (but not nearly as much as trying to find a reliable SA or OTC girl has been).
Most of the guys using BP though are trolling for bargain basement action, and therefore there are the usually array of bargain basement skanks and ROBs listed there to take their money.
You need to be careful LE sets up stings on BP all the time especially for young girls.

I read about stings involving advertisements for underage girls all the time. The only advice I have is if it looks to good to be true it likely is and if the girls looks under 25 -30 or infers of outright says she is a teenager run away fast and delete ANY conversations you may have had with "her".

The BP thing was a long story...I wanted to get to know her as a friend to and not a customer, and I managed to do that by not calling her # but friending her on FB instead. I've never given her $ for sex. Now I wish I had just fucked her for money and forget the whole "friend" thing. She's the typical sex worker flake. I had way better luck getting to know a few dancers over the years and even dated a few. Still a minefield, but navigable at least.
I'm sure things vary by market. In this area, BP was the domain of the bottom-trawlers: low quality customers seeking low-end providers. You could find diamonds in the rough, as joc mentions, since everyone has to start somewhere, but typically you avoided backpage if you weren't a bottom-shelf customer.
However, a few years ago, the local dominant sex industry site was closed, and with nothing to fill the vacuum, everyone moved to backpage. So as a customer, I had to go to BP to find quality providers, and find some way to separate them from the low-end providers. There are some new local sites that are mostly taking back over, although it remains the case that there are more quality providers on BP than there used to be 5 years ago
BP is more or less the equivalent of the girls that used to stand in street-corners back-in-the-day.
I have not done the BP nor escort thing much but the most common issues are:
+ the girl does not look anything like her pic (she looks worse or much worse)
+ they can be unreliable and hard to get in contact with
+ you don't know who's who - lots of shady people (pimps in the background, etc) - I think it's more likely one can get in a pickle w/ some shady characters than get caught up in a sting (although there may be localities that are more hell-bent on going after the johns as they see/blame the johns as the source of the problem) - but most LE seem to be mostly concerned about underage girls or human-trafficking
In the past a lot of PLs on here have mentioned TER ([view link]) as a much-better alternative to BP since that site has reviews of girls which is a help.
It's always funny on TER discussion boards to see a girl who started out on BP, but has moved up to the "big leagues", bash some guy for asking questions about or posting a review of a BP girl. How quickly they forget their origins.

BP is garbage. One of these things will almost certainly be the case:
1. It's not the girl in the pics
2. Pics are old and unrepresentative
3. She flakes on you
One of these has a slight but not insignificant chance of happening:
1. LE sting (life ruined)
2. hold-up (life potentially ended)
3. STD (life fucked up)
I never used BP as a source for finding escorts. It just seems too risky to me because you never know what you are going to get. My source for finding girls was a site that was an all-in-one kind of deal. Back in the day I used a site called Naughty Reviews. It was a good resource for finding good, reliable providers until the service changed management and got rebranded as a "dating service". The site still exists, but no one uses it anymore.
On sites like NR, providers would create an account and fill out a profile. They would post ads as often as they like. Hobbyists would create an account and review the providers they saw. Both providers and hobbysits would post on the message boards much like what we have here on TUSCL. About 90% of the members who posted on the boards would be hobbyists with very few providers participating in the discussions.
I did find a few ads on BP from a few of the girls I saw off of NR, but the ads were almost a year old at the time. It seems with BP all the legit providers may start out using it and then move on to other sites once they become more established.
