I think image is just part of it. They are probably banking on collectors who will want EVERY doll they market as well, so in Mattel's case diversity=more products=more sales. As much as the article trumps the disappearance of the thigh gap, classic barbie is not gone, she's just another option because ..... $$$kaching !
