Random Phone Calls - How Often Does It Happen To You?

They never tell you what you need to know.
In this day in age, I have to admit I have gotten pretty paranoid when it comes to protecting my personal information. In the past 6 months someone successfully was able to switch my wifes credit card account to their address (I caught it before any charges were made), I have one (different account and credit card company than hers) that was compromised and someone stole my identity but I caught it in time that they haven't done any damage YET.... and I stress the word YET...

Anyway how often do you get random phone calls on your cellphone?

On average I'd say I would get 1 strange call about every 2 to 3 weeks, but lately it's almost once a week. They are usually later in the evening and some have even been in the middle of the night. I usually Google the numbers and in most cases other people have reported the same issue "someone calls, and they hang up when answered, or never leave a message" or "I try to call the number back and nobody will pick it up," etc.

Yeah I'm probably paranoid but just wondered if it's a common thing happening with other people around the country?

Do you have me on ignore or just not noticed two threads I posted about robo calls and scam phone calls in the last few weeks? Do not call them back. Report them if you are on the do not call list and you have not done any business with them in the last year. ie, don't report your phone company because they called and tried to get you to buy extra services.

It's a massive problem in my opinion and I can't tell that much is happening to stop it. Many people with caller id no longer answer their phones if they don't know the caller so political surveys and any other survey might be considered no longer valid. Only those without caller ID still routinely answer all phone calls I thought I read. I even had my own phone number spoofed so that it looks like you're calling yourself. Maybe the phone company or NSA is monitoring now. I recently got a call saying CCI but the call got cut off. I would not have answered but I incorrectly thought maybe it was a security firm monitoring my information because of 3 attempts to reset a security setting online.

to answer the question, way too much, maybe up to 12 times a week, less recently since I blocked and reported 15 numbers.

Of course I don't have you on ignore - sorry I missed your post.

Wow 12 times - and this is on your home phone or cellphone? I have a home phone but it's just hooked up to a fax machine so I don't get any calls there.

I was worried they would find my identity so I changed my avatar! lol

I haven't had any on my cell phone. I think the reason for that is that I only give out that number to family and friends. I decline to give that number to any businesses including doctors.

Now my home phone is a different case. It is overloaded with spam. Thank goodness for caller I. D. and my answering machine.

All those calls were on my home phone land line.

Before I had caller ID I had one guy tell me I won one of three possible prizes but that he was going to transfer me to another number to get my credit card information to pay a small $5 charge for shipping. skip ahead 15 minutes and I successfully wasted 15 minutes of a scam artists time and got him ticked off and he hung up on me. I was stubborn and told him I wasn't going to tell anyone my credit card number. I let him talk a good minute or two in between asking questions but he wasn't going to change my mind. He could have scammed half a dozen other people in less time. lol. I had time to kill that evening. Used to just hang up.

Before the do not call list, I heard a story from a stripper how she bought some type of farting sound box just for telemarketers. She was excited when she got the first call with the device. She told the guy to hold on, she just ate a bean burrito and had to go really bad. She put him on hold and turned it on. She checked after 5 minutes, he was still there. lol. she put him Back on hold.

I get them all the time. I usually hang up on them. The worst are the PC technician scams, usually its a guy with a thick Eastern European accent, who say they are from Windows Technical Service or Support and need to talk to me about a problem with my PC. Yeah right, if I listen to them, then I will have a problem.

The last time they got a bit smarter and actually said Microsoft. The next time I get the call from one of those scammers, I plan on blasting an air horn right into the speaker, then ask him if his ears hurt.
