If it's a discussion, there's nothing you can really do about that, that's how long it stays up because a lot of people post things. If you write an article, it will usually stay up on the home page for at least a week.
@bang: By default, the discussion list appears to be sorted by the date on which the original post was made. That means that as new topics are added, older topics fall off the bottom. This is by design.
You can choose to sort by the last comment date instead (see the links at the top of the topic list prefaced by "Sort Discussions by"), which will keep popular topics at the top. This appears to be a "sticky" setting, i.e. once you click it, the list will *always* be sorted that way until you click the other option. It works that way for me anyway.
So, to answer your original question, the way to keep your posts at the top is to first sort by last comment date, and then post something interesting enough that people will want to respond to, thus keeping it at the top. :)
If you are really intent on keeping it there and have a worthy topic, you can ask founder to red flag it. He has done this twice in the past for me when I was promoting TUSCL conventions. They stayed right at the top.
