Illustrating the concept of standard deviation

I went to this club because it is nude and has the highest dancer rating in DC. I was not impressed. As I sat observing the mediocre dancers, I kept pondering the statistical concept of standard deviation. Considering that strip clubs are my not-so-standard deviation and greatest guilty pleasure, the double meaning gathered some momentum and inspired this review.

For the initiated, standard deviation is a measure of how dispersed the data is in a set in relation to the mean or average. Low, or small, standard deviation indicates data are clustered tightly around the mean, and high, or large, standard deviation indicates data are more spread out. Based on what I was observing at this club, I figure it has benefited from many reviewers giving the dancers a score of 7 with very few 4s or 10s. This small standard deviation has locked the club into an inflated, and in my opinion, undeserving, dancer/people score.

I arrived a little after 9pm on a Thursday, had my ID checked (no cover) and proceeded upstairs (club is on 2nd floor). Like most DC clubs, the space is small. The finishes here are fancy with nice details and lighting. At the top of the stairs the club space is to the left. There is a small stage directly ahead with a bar to the right. The stage is near floor level and has a ring instead of a pole. The metal ring was utilized well by a couple of athletic dancers, but was not used much by the others. I guess big girls also struggle with the pole. There is a long bench along the left wall on either side of the stage with a collection of movable tables and chairs in the open area. There is a raised area near the front windows that may have been a VIP seating area. The DJ booth was in this section. The restroom was in the back past the bar. This restroom area was so dark I could not see that you have to step into this section. There are private rooms up additional stairs on the third floor.
