Still Gets The Job Done
I try to get to Detroit once or twice a year, literally only for the clubbing. Detroit offers the opportunity to do things other Midwest cities don't, so it becomes a destination. On a trip two years ago, I nearly didn't go to Penthouse, having heard about changes there. On a whim, I did, and was darn glad, as I found there to be barely any falloff in services, even if the environment was less comfortable, so to speak. Having read recently of a seeming shift toward better talent at Flight Club, I still figured I would check out both, but still dedicated a little more time to Penthouse. For the sake of those who may be choosing between one or another, it will be important not only to review Penthouse, but to review it in comparison to Flight Club.
I made two trips to Penthouse over two days: One where I arrived around 11:30 at night on a Thursday, the other where I came in close to when it opened for the day shift on Friday. Obviously the vibe is very different on both days. I'll focus more on the night shift, but will touch on day shift as well. For comparison purposes, I left Penthouse's day shift Friday to go try the Flight Club dayshift.
Penthouse is on 8 Mile in Detroit. While it's not what I would call the best part of town — on a previous Saturday night visit, there was enough of a police presence and scene outside a roller rink west of the club to make me think something bad happened — and you can read horror stories of those who have ventured off the beaten path to the club, I've always been one to believe such areas aren't necessarily as unsafe as you might think, and that if you don't either go looking for trouble or drive up in a fancy car that screams "rob me," you're fine.
