I see Sam Neill from Jurrasic Park died. I've seen him in some stuff, great actor, he was perfect as Dr Grant. I thought it'd be a good excuse for this thread in his honor.
I'd have to go Viggo Mortensen for Aragorn, I really don't think you could have a better guy cast in that role. He was badass as fuck in that. Big fan. I was actually reading up on it he was like a last minute emergency back up plan for Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings after they fired the original dude. Stuart Townsend was his name, the guy from the Queen of the Damned movie. I mean thank God they fired that guy, he looks like a boyband backstreet boy dude, he would have RUINED that franchise. I heard they also offered it to Russel Crowe and Nick Cage, they even talked about Vin Diesal! I don't see any of that working. Anyway it almost didn't happen but maybe I think this ended up being the best casting decision all time.

George Clooney as Danny Ocean was pretty much perfect. I think he fit better for the role than Sinatra did in the original. But then again, acting was never Frank's strong suit.
The Batman franchise also struck gold twice with their casting of Jokers. First with Jack Nicholson in 1989 and then again with Heath Ledger for the 2008 version. Both were perfect for the particular time.
Actors / actresses are so interchangeable. I could see Liam Neesen as Aragon and Ben Afleck as Danny Ocean. Probably a dozen other options that would have been very good. That’s why they all have to virtue signal all the time to stay in the good graces of liberal Hollywood power brokers. I read a story recently that Michelle Obama ( a real show biz pro lol) the exec producer of Larry David’s new HBO show, made damn sure Cheryl Hines didn’t get a roll in it because she didn’t like her political association with her husband, RFK Jr. They’ll plug in some actress like her to play his wife.
That said, James Galdolfini as Tony Soprano was pretty incredible. He wasn’t a big name actor when he got that very demanding role. Incredible range.

My all time favorite movie, Casablanca, pretty much has perfect casting for all the roles. That is one of the reasons it is a classic.

James Caan - "Rollerball." Jason Statham the vast majority of his movies like The Bee Keeper." Thomas Jane "The Punisher". My all time favorite was Robert Shaw in "Jaws."
I’ll nominate Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, for both 1&2. Idk, I guess just her persona for her respective roles of stressed out waitress and later weary resistor.
Somebody already said the great Gandolfini so I'll think of another one, Jon Hamm in Mad Men did an amazing job. He's another guy I don't think had a whole lot of big roles under his belt before he made it huge and killed it with his first hit. Lucky guy got to work with January Jones too, such a hottie.
Jack Nicholson - One Flew
I’m surprised nobody mentioned Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone.
Pretty much the entire cast of Glengarry Glen Ross. Jack Lemmon is great in that.
The question is harder than it seems, I think. The great roles that became so burned into our minds it's hard to imagine anyone else, but I think that's partially because we've never seen anyone else do it. If we had never seen Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, someone else might have also done a great job, but then we'd never have seen Gandolfini, so nothing to compare it to. But yeah, I really can't imagine anyone else as Soprano. Another one that comes to mind is Al Bundy. The whole Married With Children cast was great, but probably wouldn't have been nearly as good without Ed O'Neill. He defined the whole show. Also Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Not taking anything away from Travolta, but Jackson would be harder to replace in that movie.
Not really a fan but Johnny Depp as captain Jack Sparrow was perfect. And Marvel has done an unbelievable job casting their movies for the most part.
Speaking of Stallone as Rocky, the story of the making of the movie is coming out : “I Play Rocky”. Stallone wrote Rocky and insisted he play the lead role. Ballsy for someone new to Hollywood.

For TV, probably the whole cast of "Friends". It just worked even though the first five seasons were better than the last five seasons. For movies I would say Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. I can't imagine anyone else saying "Go Ahead, Make my day" any better.
Charles Bronson - Death wish movies. "Do you believe in Jesus son"? "Yes, yes I do". "Well, you're gonna meet him".

Just randomly stumbled upon another one. Jaws happened to be on TV today. Robert Shaw as Quint. "I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him and kill him for ten." "Hooper drives the boat, chief." The story about the USS Indianapolis. It's just not the same movie without him.
Blues Brothers. I'm not a big Dan Ackroyd fan, but team him with John Belushi, and it'd be damn tough to find a better comedy duo.
Almost forgot Robin Williams, too. He just needed the right director to keep him on a short leash, then you could get stellar performances out of him.
