I did some quick research. Here’s what I found: I just focused on linemen because there aren’t any WRs weighing 300lbs!

(Not my words below):

The Evolution of Linemen

Height: In the late 1960s, a standard offensive or defensive lineman stood at 6'3" to 6'4". Today, they average 6'5", though modern left tackles and specialized ends regularly measure anywhere between 6'6" and 6'8".

Weight: (The Massive Change): A typical lineman in 1969 weighed between 245 and 255 pounds. Today, an average offensive lineman weighs 310 to 320 pounds, while defensive linemen average around 295 to 305 pounds.

Here’s what I found interesting (again not my words):

Why the difference? The explosion in weight is largely due to modern athletic training, year-round nutritional science, and the implementation of specialized substitutions. Because modern rule changes prohibit blocking below the waist, linemen have bulked up to create an impenetrable, explosive wall using pure size and fat-free mass.

I'll let these stats speak for themselves.

Brian Urlacher weighed 258 pounds (117 kg) during his NFL career

Dwayne Johnson’s peak weight during his WWE prime was often billed at 275 pounds, with some estimates suggesting his actual weight was closer to 260 pounds at that time

Hulk Hogan, born Terry Gene Bollea, was officially billed at 6 feet 7 inches (201 cm) and over 300 pounds during his prime wrestling years, particularly in the 1980s and early 1990s Wikipedia Wikipedia +1 . Sources indicate that his actual peak weight was around 302 pounds (137 kg), reflecting his heavily muscled, bodybuilder-inspired physique wikibio.us wikibio.us . At this weight, Hogan had 24-inch biceps and a chest and arms that were iconic in professional wrestling, contributing to his larger-than-life persona Wikipedia Wikipedia +1 . Jason Momoa's heaviest weight is approximately 235 pounds (106 kilograms). He typically weighs around this range, which contributes to his imposing on-screen presence

Howie Long, the Hall of Fame defensive end, was listed at 268 pounds (121–122 kg) during his NFL career Pro-Football-Reference.com+1. This weight was consistent with his athletic build and playing style, which required strength and durability on the defensive line.

Walter Payton weighed 200 pounds (90 kg) during his playing career, although some sources report his weight as 204 pounds or 205 pounds

People are bigger because of all the chemicals they ingest voluntarily and involuntarily. The idea they are bigger now because of working out would make more sense if these paper mache athletes didn't get a million soft tissue injuries. Imagine small er people never pulling a hamstring.

Does the NFL test for PED's?

^ Maybe not to 100 years ago, but that's not what I meant. A big athletic injured guy, on the bench because of a soft tissue injury is just as effective as a 300 yard drive in golf, into the trees. In defense of Babe Ruth. He wore heavy, wool uniform, had to hit a baseball that had the consistency of a sponge, pitchers actually tried to hit you with the ball and when you travelled you didn't get on a private plane. My point was people are bigger. I watched San Antonio lose to the team from a criminal deviant city run by a psycho and thought of the 1984 Celtic Lakers final. I didn't see any improvement in the athletes, although the quality of play did suck.

Then again the greatest athlete of all time isn't even a human being. Yes, I am talking about you Secretariat. Wins the triple crown; sets the record in every single triple crown race in 1973; 53 years later they still stand. He wasn't technically a farmer in the offseason, but he did live on a farm lol.

2 athletes who transcend their era, dominated and rewrote practically all their sport’s record and would be superstars if they played today; Babe Ruth and Wilt Chamberlain.

One of my high school science teachers, Lonnie Maich, was also an offensive tackle for the Hamilton Tiger Cats if the CFL. He was about 6'2" and 220 pounds and this was about 1968. And yes, when his teaching day was over, he had to drive 25 miles to Hamilton for practice. I'm my older daughter's senior year of HS in 2000 two of the linemen were 305 and 295 pounds respectively, smh.
