I plan on going in the daytime alone and kind of worried about safety. I plan on crossing by foot and I hear the shuttle is the safest way to go. I'm hispanic and won't stand out much which is good but I don't know much spanish. Anything I need to be worried about?

Just take the zona shuttle. Both directions. The most you should tip is two dollars if you solo in the vehicle. They seem to have no problem with the policia.
