When I bought my new car in 2020, I disabled many built-in safety options quickly. I was "almost" perfectly fine with the enhanced front and rear camera for parking, have always liked apple car play, and the "waze" app warning of police attention in my travels. What modern features (built into your car) do you like and what options do you hate?
Question for Boomers?

Jump to latestI drive a stick so it has less of the safety crap. I dislike all advancements, except one: cars no longer begin rolling back the split second you take your foot off the brake, making driving a stick easier so I can leave my car with my wife and take her econo car out when I drink.
I’m in a lot of rental cars so a lot of times I don’t learn some features or figure out how to shut some of them off. Side note, one of the nicest everyday cars that are well thought and easy to learn - Toyota Camry.
Worst ever is the auto on/off Engle idle feature. I’ve been in cars where I can’t figure how to turn it off or it may not be able to be turned off, or many newer cars you have to “turn off” the feature each time you get into the vehicle.
I’ve had some cars start beeping non-stop to put the seat belt on even before I’ve put the vehicle into gear. That’s annoying.
I rarely use a rear camera, I still turn around and look. They are good when linking up to a trailer and I think a front camera is one of the most underrated features in cars these days.
It wasn’t for the gas prices and gas mileage. I’ll be driving my 41 Cadillac. Came with absolutely no accessories at all. No radio. no power anything and a stick shift. Not even seatbelts, but it does have a horn and a rearview mirror.
@Jascoi do you think it's better to not wear seat belts so you'll be thrown clear of the accident?
Best tech improvement: blind spot warning indicators. By far. I don’t need them, but it’s made a lot of the other dumbasses on the road more careful about changing lanes.
I like rear view cameras, blind spot warning, and apple car play. But please give me my buttons and knobs back for the radio and ac controls!
I'm not a boomer, I'm Gen X. But two things I really like on a couple of my my vehicles is the heads up display and the camera rearview mirror.
I with you "Iknowbetter" on the buttons and knobs. WOODDR2: I recently drove a long distance transporting some larger household items. The use of the camera rear view mirror was a need but left me almost car sick at times. A lot of my friends (and my mechanic acquaintance, are almost all anti "adaptive cruise control". I love adaptive cruise control but participate in smoothing out some of the slow lag time in returning to the appropriate road speed. I find my use of my lead foot to be more problematic in my Automobile meanderings. The mechanic acquaintance replaces transmissions for a living, and I told him that when my transmission bites it - I won't duck his - "I told you so". 98,000 miles and that snark hasn't bit me yet!
My Subaru drives me nuts. It's 3 years old. To save gas, it stops charging the battery while you drive. Then in the middle of the night the car starts doing something, I don't know what it's doing but I can hear it. So sometimes, after not driving for a few weeks, the battery is too low to start the car. It's been a known problem for years. I may buy a tesla robo-taxi when they come out. Think of the possibilities. You can send your car to go pick up a hooker and drive her to your house. If someone needs a ride you can just send your car.
^^^ I often wonder about that. If cars were made that are truly self driving, and say I had to take a 3 hour flight somewhere, I would just get in my car and drive overnight, sleeping in the back seat to avoid the hassles of flying.
It would be amazing if it were that simple. That would kill a lot of the ""puddle jumper" airlines down the road.
For me a lot of trips for pleasure are nixed just because of the exhausting drive.
any person that drives a suburu is a lesbian. the suburu was specifically marketed to lesbians and have a cult following among lesbians. Google: was suburu marketed to lesbians... go to PTOWN drivers - all pussy all day
Yes, in the mid-1990s, Subaru intentionally targeted lesbians in the United States after research revealed they were four times more likely to buy a Subaru, specifically the Outback. Subarus were marketed to this demographic using "queer-coded" ads featuring in-jokes, such as license plates reading "XENA LVR" or "P-TOWN", that appealed to lesbians without explicitly alienating broader audiences
When I need to travel I appreciate all the current creature comforts and safety features. Adaptive cruise control, lane assist, collision avoidance, blind spot indicators, etc. are all useful for long trips.
However, when I want to DRIVE, there's gonna be a stick on the floor and the carburetor on top of the engine.
What is God's name is good about carburetors?
There are plenty of drivers that I would call “Gearheads” (w Respect to them that enjoy a different and more vibrant driving experience.
I am not a big fan of restomods. So all my toys, past and present, have had carburetors. If you ask a Boomer question, you're likely to get Boomer answers.
I'm technically pre Boomer and I can tell you that trying to balance the twin carburetors on a Corvair is not fun.
I asked the Boomer question and I totally understand and agree.
Pre-Boomer is the Greatest Generation since they came up during the hard times of the 1930s and 1940s.

Being a fan of compact cars, I dislike automatic transmission, power steering, electric windows, pretty much anything that's electric rather than manual. I give ABS the benefit of the doubt, although it's far more important to avoid hard braking as much as possible. I like the backup camera, but I could live without it. It's annoying that I have to make sure bluetooth is off on my phone, so the car will quit trying to vulcan mind meld with it. I just use the nav app on my phone.
If I live long enough, I'm looking forward to not having a car, and typically only having to wait 5 minutes or less for a self-driving taxi to show up.
