Man’s new friend accused of stealing his car, gun from Westlake motel
WESTLAKE, Ohio – A male guest at the WestSpring Inn on Sperry Drive reported at 5 a.m. on April 5 that a new friend he had just met disappeared from the motel with his car and handgun.
The victim’s Kia Seltos had been parked at the WestSpring Inn while he was staying there for the past couple of days. He suspected that a woman, whom he had met online and only knew for a couple of days, had taken the keys from the room and left with the car.
Police said his suspicion was strengthened by the fact that all her possessions were also gone from the motel room. The victim only knew the woman as “Z.” The man’s Taurus handgun had also been in the car when it was taken. The car and firearm were entered into police databases as stolen.
Officers tracked the vehicle to Detroit and contacted authorities there. Detroit police found the car in their city and arrested the woman known as “Z,” who was still with the Kia. She told Detroit officers that she rented the vehicle from the man at the WestSpring Inn. The victim denied her claim.
Detroit police arrested the woman, who was identified as a 20-year-old Cleveland resident.
Westlake authorities charged her with theft of the vehicle and handgun in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, according to a police department statement. The missing gun was still in the vehicle, and Detroit police recovered it. Westlake detectives advised the victim that he would have to collect his possessions in Detroit.
