Food Safety at Azul

I know I’m opening myself up to a bit of mocking here but here it goes anyways:

Im going to TJ for the first time in 3 weeks and , aside from plenty of chinese food at Hong Kong, I am planning to only eat at Azul.

However, I have a really fucked up stomach and I’m worried about food safety/hygiene at Azul.

I’ve had “Bali Belly” before (in southeast asia) and it landed me in hospital for 2 wks and I’d really like to avoid a repeat.

Do u guys know how safe (hygienic) the food there is?? In particular whether they wash vegetables using contaminated tap water, etc??

Thnk you in advance!

Also - if anybody has any recommendations of elsewhere that may be safe for westerners to eat??

That's a shame, because the street food in TJ can be quite good! But you should have zero concerns eating at Azul, or at Senda Norte across the street.

If you feel like switching it up but still staying close to the Zona, I highly recommend Caesar's, Mochomos, and Villa Marina.

I’d be concerned about more than just food hygiene

What do you mean by that @iknowbetter ?

Are you referring to general safety? If so - my understanding is that if you stick to the clubs area, and dont get drunk or high in public, that you’ll be fine

@NWorth My pleasure! I've done hundreds, if not thousands, of visits to TJ over the years, so happy to share whatever I can with someone who is about to make their first visit. All I can say is that you're making a great decision!

In my hundreds of visits, I’ve had no problem with the food or drinks.

The only real problem I’ve had is been with the bandits with badges take the Zona shuttle and don’t walk out too often onto the streets. I look both ways before I step out now. And hide most of your money.

On my second paragraph, put a period after the phrase ‘bandits with badges’.

In my couple hundred trips to TJ I have been stopped by the police twice. Once driving to the Hyatt on the north side of downtown, once walking from the Zona to the arch. Both times I was sent on my way with a warning and treated with respect, no hassle at all. I think it’s a bit of bad luck if you get the dickhead cop but I’ve found some of those stateside also. Plus as jascoi says, hide your big bills in you socks or underwear if your worried about losing it. It’s not only bad cops who’ll steal if they get a chance.

I've been stopped twice. Once getting out of a taxi by the border and once walking from HK to Chicago. Both times, held my money and passport in my hands. Let go without a problem. Always kept a $5 (now a $10) in my shoe to get a taxi to the border.
