Strip clubs and the public good

Avatar for docsavage

Strip clubs are sometimes shut down on the basis of the public good. The argument is made that they are detrimental to public morals, exploit women or are centers of drug use or prostitution. I have always felt if you do not like something, the best thing to do is direct your attention or money elsewhere. This is true whether it involves strip clubs, prostitutes, drugs, gambling, the Jimmy Kimmel show, Bud Light or Guess jean ads, the Snow White remake, Charlie Kirk speeches, rap songs advocating violence, etc. We create the society we want to live in by how we spend our money.

Yeah, I'm there with you. Although, I'm not ready to switch the channel on Sydney Sweeney ads. I did buy some AE jeans, and I was impressed with the quality and fit, and price was great. I was surprised.

I personally believe that the public moral values of strip clubs are better than they used to be, and not because they have personally improved. It’s because other industries have gotten worse.

I think when it comes to their intended purpose. Strip clubs offer a legal, needed outlet for some vices.

I'm with you to a point. Some people, particularly children, need some sort of filter or boundaries until they're old enough to sort through the various vices on their own. And parents should be that first, most influential filter, not politicians or teachers or clergy -- parents. It's their children, it's their responsibility.

@PhantomGeek its the government that decides. If parents were showing their kids porn, or allowing them to drink or smoke, they would just have the kids taken away?

Causation or correlation? Strip clubs are typically in the shittiest part of town. (With the notable exception of Washington DC where Archibalds and Camelot are in the middle of the high rent NW DC business district). But are strip clubs in shitty parts of town because they’re strip clubs? Or is that part of town shitty because the strip clubs are there?

Here in Indianapolis many strip clubs were in working class areas. Over time, those areas turned into slums. Restaurants and stores closed and new ones opened further out of the city. This did not happen with strip clubs. There were no new strip clubs allowed so we just have ones that opened decades ago stuck in declining areas of town.

I can see having some zoning restrictions. But we have a right to see titties, and when we go in the back we have a right to get a blow job. Although personally I like getting serviced right at the bar.

@ iknowbetter, strip clubs are in bad or secluded parts of town due solely because they are clubs. I have seen no study on strip clubs that suggest their presence causes social decline.

The truth is that strip clubs put in high traffic and high income areas (Huntsville,AL) often flourish in that environment and don't reduce the environment.

It's a social engineering device to keep certain voices out of reach to the larger population. What most people fail to realize is that strip clubs actually are a necessary evil. They allow a venting of sexual frustration that is actually beneficial both to the women working (income) and to the clients.

If you keep your society sexually repressed, you actually increase the chance of sex crimes happening (rape, child molestation, etc.)

@ docsavage, that is usually the case. The truth is that environments change overtime. A strong middle class town can turn into a desolate town once the industry leaves for multiple reasons. I have seen this happen before. Strip clubs are just the punching bag for politicians so that they have something to blame. People and places change their habits and locations LONG before strip clubs change their business.
