Why is more expensive to fly from South US to Columbia vs TJ

I never understood why the prices are so extremely different in flying from Alabama to San Diego vs Alabama to literally any South American country. I'm looking at close to $1000 to get any SA trip. I only have to spend around 350 to get to San Diego and cross into Mexico.

Low demand and low competition are probably the biggest reasons.

@Icey - you have no idea what you are talking about. the only air service to Tijuana from any US city nonstop is a once a day flight on American Eagle operated by Sky West from Phoenix. Cost is $279 round trip.

Both @shadowcat and @Icey are correct. I think the problem is that going straight from Huntsville (a big military contractor city) into a foreign country probably does demand a higher fee. It's the convenience of the flight and the fact that it's a low demand flight.

Domestic flights typically incur less taxes because domestic airlines keep the entire ticket cost. Crossing into TJ is a cost that I am paying.

Airline prices don’t make sense unless you have the data. Ultimately it’s supply and demand. This is an industry where “open jaws” flights can save money.

What airline flies nonstop from LAX to TIJ? I can't find one

^ @founder I don't think there is one. In fact I think Phoenix, AZ has the only nonstop flight from the US into TIJ.

From LAX your best bet is to get on another plane to SAN or take the train.

Just wondering, since icey seems positive you can fly for $100. Just more lies

@icey did you look at the actual flights?

Checking out expedia shows me no direct flights. expedia.com

All the LAX->TIJ flights there are 1 stop, either through PHX or Guadalajara. Which makes it like a 7-20 hour trip, you'd almost be better off riding a bike from LAX.

Just like icey to not dig deeper into the details. Headline skimming intelligence

^lol @icey. Just because phoenix is close to LA doesnt mean a flight with layover is short. A layover can be for any amount of time.

Also if you look at Rons post… or use maps to verify distances, it makes no sense to take a flight from LA to TIJ with a stop because its already so close.

I drive. To me that's less hassle.
