American Pastime

I was reading a news article a few years back that referred to drunk driving as a favorite 'American pastime'. The article went on to complain how along road shoulders and ditches there were so many discarded beer cans, liquor bottles, nips, and other alcoholic beverage containers. I have done Adopt A Highway before and can attest to that.

I think drinking and driving is pretty normal in the upper Midwest. There are a lot of people of German ancestry and drinking is just part of the culture. South Dakota has the highest number of DUI's per capita, followed by North Dakota. Minnesota and Wisconsin are also heavy drinking states. Wisconsin has the most bars per capita. So you would think these areas where drunk driving is practically a sport would have the most drunk driving fatalities? Not true. It looks as though areas with high Hispanic populations have the most drunk driving fatalities per capita. In fact, there is not a single data point on the below chart in South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, or Indiana. I think certain people can manage to drive drunk without harming others, while for other groups the 0.08 is probably too lenient a standard.

I'd agree with that. Anyone who lives in a city with a major Hispanic culture has experienced just how badly they drive and how often they drive drunk. That's not racist, it's fact. Passing through Orlando, Miami, and places nearby Naples or Fort Myers with the largest immigrant populations have the highest amount of fatal traffic incidents. However, it is never possible that this nation can have two sets of laws divided by race. Even if it's backed by science, it is better to change the law for all to address the lowest common denominator. Or kick out all the illegals.

I find it interesting to note they some of the upper Midwest states - Wisconsin, North & South Dakota - often are ranked as some of the highest drinking states per capita, yet do not appear on this chart. Something can be said for hibernating at home in the winter.

I don’t know how this correlates to drunk driving, but Florida does not have state vehicle inspections and as a result the immigrant population drive the crappiest, unsafe piece of shit cars that lead to a lot of wrecks. And that’s when you find out that the immigrant driver of a piece of shit car with bald tires and bad brakes who just ran into you does not have insurance or a pot to piss in.

Uber/Lyft has made getting home when you’ve had too much to drink extremely easy in communities where cabs are the norm.

I've lived all of my 58 years in an urban area of New Jersey. Been driving fucked up since high school. I usually don't overdo it too much, but there's been probably a dozen times I don't even remember coming home, and can't count how many times I parked and turned off the car, then breathed a sigh of relief that I made it home without any incident. Once I woke up the next morning with my face on the pavement. As I got my bearings, I realized my feet were still in the car. I had literally crawled halfway out and then passed out right there. Never had an accident or got a DUI. Once I got pulled over when I wasn't even drinking. Cop claimed I had my high beams on, which was bullshit because I never turn my high beams on, not ever. He gave me the whole drunk test, walk the line, touch your nose, alphabet backwards, all that shit. Cop said I appeared "right on the borderline" and how would I feel about taking a breathalyzer. I said give it to me right now. I don't want to wait until we get down to the station because my drunk might wear off by then. He was like, okay, I'm gonna let you go with a warning. Yeah, thanks a lot asshole.

In North and South Dakota most dui deaths are native American. The reservations have about a 40% rate of alcoholism and the rural areas mean people drive a long way back from the bar.

About 30 years ago I lived in a small city of about 35,000 people. Lots of low skill assembly jobs for the transportation industry. So that town was at ground zero for one of the first heavy waves of immigration from Mexico.

But the city still had a small town feel to it. Still had a local newspaper that actually published a crime log. All DUI arrests and sentences were printed. So there’s printed empirical evidence that backs up gammanu’s claim. Conservatively, 85% of the names for DUI and driving without a license were Hispanic.
