BEAUMONT, Texas — A man is in critical condition Monday after being shot by a Beaumont Police officer late Sunday night during a shootout in the parking lot of a Beaumont strip club.

The man had been kicked out of Temptations Adult Cabaret Sunday night and had threatened to return with a "machine gun" according to Beaumont Police Chief Jimmy Singletary.

The man returned to the strip club in the 5900 block of College Street with a handgun and began shooting outside club Singletary said.

Police were called to the club at about 11 p.m. Sunday for an active shooter call according to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department.

When the officer arrived and confronted the man he was still firing and was then shot by the officer according to Singletary.

The suspect was at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in critical condition as of Monday afternoon Singletary said.

There were about 20 people inside the strip club at the time of the shooting according to Singletary.

One other person was injured, though they were not shot, during the incident but Singletary did not give more details on the injury.

The officer is now on administrative leave during the investigation which is standard practice Singletary said.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and have not said what the man's motive may have been.

If you're in Texas and tell somebody you'll be back with a machine gun, you'd best come back with a machine gun.
