Jefferson was a smart guy. For instance, the first draft of the Declaration of Independence would have made it nearly impossible for slavery to remain legal and government sanctioned. As a political move, he elected to give up that part to preserve the whole, which allowed slavery to be abolished later, though I suspect he would have been surprised at how long it took.

Yes, he was a slave owner. Had he freed all of this slaves though, it would have accomplished nothing. Under the laws of the day, had they been recaptured by another, they would very likely have been re-enslaved, in much harsher conditions. It's not an excuse for not having the courage of one's convictions, but in the mores of the day (still wrong, even if not acknowledged as such), he was far more anti-slavery than even some today are.

Couldn't free his slaves as they were collateral to the large debts he held. He was never able to live within his means. So everything he had was at the end owned by the bank.
