The reason menstrating would even be such a big deal in that society was because it’s a way to project: hey suitors, this one is ready to carry around your genetic material!
I don’t see what the point would be in modern times.
We actually do have ways of initiation into adulthood for both boys and girls. They are just more diffuse and pluralistic. These primitive society initiations are compulsory and often violent. You could not do today some of the things which were done. We have a diversity of views about what constitutes adulthood, and about when it should come into play.
