Anything by 10,000 Maniacs is good too. In My Tribe and Our Time in Eden are both great albums for melancholic music.

Mad World by Tears for Fears and anything by the Smiths immediately jumped at me.

The Michael Andrews & Gary Jules version is much more melancholic imo. I think it might've been written for Donnie Darko (they use an original Tears for Fears song in that film, too).

That is true! That’s a really good one to include as well.
