If you want melancholy music you can't do better than Bessie Smith.
Mad World comes to mind...
Mad World by Tears for Fears and anything by the Smiths immediately jumped at me.
People Who Died too, but just the lyrics.
The Michael Andrews & Gary Jules version is much more melancholic imo. I think it might've been written for Donnie Darko (they use an original Tears for Fears song in that film, too).
Also: The Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice youtu.be
Blackout by Muse youtu.be
Wounded Bird by Charles & Eddie youtu.be
Black by Danger Mouse youtu.be
Since pretty much everything by Lana Del Ray has some degree of melancholy, I'm adding her song "Radio" to the list because I like it.
Hello by evanescence: It’s a song that about Amy Lee (lead singer) thinking about when her sister died as a child
Swallow by Emilie Autumn m.youtube.com
Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez m.youtube.com
By Your Side by Sade. (Absolutely beautiful) youtu.be
(She has tons of others but that is by far my favorite of her. So talented.)
This tune by Billie Holiday has been called the cause of more suicides than any other
Ooh yeah and also One Song Glory. It’s a song from the musical Rent
Hearing boy bands makes me want to commit suicide. Does that count?
The River by Joni Mitchell. The saddest Christmas song ever.
Ok, if we're including musicals I'll also add a Rent some. "Without You" (there are several other sad ones in their lineup).
And when I think of "Without You" from Rent I just remember poor Mimi in the stripper dressing room looking so sick and sad, then another quick shot of her dancing unhappily. :(
Last dance with mary jane one of my favorite songs! R. I. P TOM PETTY!!!!!

Shouldn’t have admitted that. Now Nina is going to inbox you daily with boyband music :p
“And when I think of "Without You" from Rent I just remember poor Mimi in the stripper dressing room looking so sick and sad, then another quick shot of her dancing unhappily. :(“
That is true! That’s a really good one to include as well.
Obviously I remember other shots, like Collins with Angel. So sad.
I was a Rent-head in high school. Saw the musical live twice.
Let's not forget this sad scene in The Blue Note club.
"My Woman" - Al Bowlly youtube.com "Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve youtube.com
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Added to the play list.
