RICHMOND, Va. -- A Virginia lawmaker has filed a bill that would declare pornography a public health hazard in Virginia.

State Delegate Bob Marshall, (R-Prince William), proposed the bill that says porn leads to social problems, such as hypersexualization of teenagers and normalizes violence and abuse of women and children.

The bill does not call for a porn ban, only the need for education, research, and policy change to address the “public health crisis.”

The legislation says the "pornography epidemic" needs to be addressed on a broad scale to help prevent exposure and addiction.

“When you see more of these episodes of teens texting pictures to each other, there’s obviously an obsession or fixation on the body as an object, not a person,” Marshall said in a recent interview with GayRVA. “It’s not very helpful for social relations or later development of a family. I thought, lets draw a line in the sand.”

Marshall says early exposure to pornography leads to low self-esteem and body image disorders in young people.

The legislation will be considered when 2017 regular session of the General Assembly begins on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

Not surprised. Virginia (I live in this area) has always been pretty strict with its laws. Which is why the clubs in Virginia suck, especially the ones in Richmond which require pasties :-(

personality i can understand what he seems to be saying. the problem is you cannot legislate morality. and the hypocrisy that elected officials, bureaucrats, lawyers, judges, law enforcement, religious folks and educators are filled with. we are just people with normal desires.

@justme62, "you cannot legislate morality"

Um, virtually every law on the books is legislating someone's morality. From jaywalking to murder, they're moral issues.

If it were constitutional to ban porn, then it would be banned throughout the entire country. It is because brave people challenged these laws in our highest courts, and because we used to have more liberal justices, that today the government cannot deny you access to porn.

I think porn can blow away a young person's mind - so I think making it hard for someone under 18 to get it would probably be a good thing and and having an education campaign w.r.t. it would probably be a good idea

I don't think one can ban it due to the First Amendment. Adults have a legal right to access it. I've written on Tuscl before about some of the damaging effects of hard core pornography (watched to and in excess) over masturbation (3X or more a day). Sex with a woman is healthy (esp. loving sex), beating off daily to porn as a surrogate is not. And that's even before we consider teens and young adults in the discussion.
