I know many of you older guys will have no clue who this is, but in the rap/hip-hop community Malik Taylor aka Phife Dawg of Tribe Called Quest is an iconic figure in one if the most influential and popular rap groups of all time. He had been suffering from diabetes and had a kidney transplant back in 2008. RIP

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the group here are links to a couple of their songs which are my favorites although I have many more in my iTunes. Those of you who are fans feel free to mention your favorite Tribe songs.

I loved A Tribe Called Quest growing up. My older brother whom is now deceased had all of their albums and he would play them regularly. Their first three albums are classics although I liked The Low End Theory the best.

I always thought Q-Tip was just not the same without Phife on his solo career.

Although it's not totally clear how he died, it appears he had diabetes and was quoted saying he was addicted to sugar. It sounds like even though he had diabetes he didn't have the will power to change his diet, this is speculation of course.

Beats, Rhymes and Life was played a lot during my college days.
