A minor drinking at Big Daddy’s Show Club Saturday night faces three felony charges after allegedly pointing a gun at someone who wouldn’t give him $5.
Kokomo police were dispatched to Big Daddy’s, 1503 N. Davis Road, at about 11:49 p.m. Saturday in reference to a man pointing a handgun at other patrons, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by Howard County Deputy Prosecutor Michael Krebes.
Officers arrested Brenton A. Hoppes, 19, 900 block of West Virginia Avenue, and he now faces charges of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony; pointing a loaded firearm, a Level 6 felony; criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony; and illegal consumption of alcohol. He is being held at the Howard County Jail on a $25,000 bond, and an initial hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. this morning in Howard County Circuit Court.
Hoppes had previously been convicted of robbery, a B felony; in August 2013.
The victim, a 33-year-old male, told officers that Hoppes was going around the club asking people for $5. When the victim told him he didn’t have $5, Hoppes said there was going to be a problem and allegedly pulled a handgun out of his waistband and pointed it at the victim’s chest, according to the police report. One of Hoppes’ friends pushed the victim to the ground, and Hoppes pointed the gun at him again, according to the victim’s account.
When officers arrived at the scene, Hoppes and another male were walking across the parking lot away from the club. Officers saw Hoppes bend down and put something in the grass next to the fence in the alley north of Big Daddy’s, and they found a 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun there that was loaded with a bullet in the chamber.
Big Daddy's manager Cliff Rikard said Hoppes had a fake ID, which is how he was able to enter the club and be served alcohol. A preliminary breath test showed Hoppes’ Blood Alcohol Content was 0.157.
