What are the purpose and uses of them. I cannot find anything on this site that tells me what they are good for. I finally added one to see if anything would happen as a result. Like getting an email alerting me of a new review. Nothing is differnt. So why use them?

Also lets a member see what clubs other members seem to favor.

It's mostly a place to list my favorite clubs on here and also ones I may be interested in visiting in the future. You can always take them off your list if you wish to do so. I think it's mostly for my convenience, although as has been noted, other members can read your list. I don't know if it's a huge positive, but I don't see anything negative about it.
I personally don't use them, but I've seen some users comment that they use them to keep track of out of town clubs which they might want to visit, like samsung said.
I used to use it to help me organize my favorite clubs and saves me the hassle of having to search for each one individually to read their reviews
