Movie Review: The Runaways

I've been waiting almost a year for this movie.

Back in the mid 1970's, there was a groundbreaking all girl rock band called The Runaways, because they literally were runaways. They were also talented musicians. Rock n roll, however, has always been a male dominated profession. The girls were too young and too poorly managed to ever go BIG, but they came close.

The biopic focuses on Runaway members Joan Jett and Sherie Curry. Joan was determined to be a rock star and Sherie was a 15 year old sucked into the group for image purposes. It's important to mention here that Sherie's father was an alcoholic, so, when the girls jump, feet first, into the live fast, die hard, drugs, sex, and rock n roll lifestyle, Sherie, predictably, unravels.

For the music fans, there's some great music, but very little of the band's story is actually told. This might be all we see of the band's history, but true rock fans can tell you the full history of important bands, including The Runaways.

This movie is important for those into rock history. As a stand alone flick, not so much.
