Convenient to Mass Transit
PSA for those who aren’t familiar with Philadelphia: There is no reason to consider this SC unless you find yourself in Center City Philadelphia for some other reason. If you have the wherewithal to travel into Center City just to go to a SC, there are better options available in other parts of the city that are at least as easy to get to. Even if you are staying at a Center City hotel, it’s probably a fair trade to pay an Uber fare to Delilah’s rather than walk to Gold Club.
Especially now that it is open earlier in the afternoon, the club does fill a niche, an easy, no-drama getaway for people who are downtown for their job or business to spend a little time with some: scantily clad, sometimes moderately attractive women, some of whom may be amenable to extras for the right price. Harkening to the tile of this review, NJ commuters may have an expanded opportunity to board the Speedline with a tent, or, maybe, a wet spot, in their pants. There are tradeoffs, though.
Entry to the club is at the dead end of a half-block delivery alley. Looks like the movie set ending of every film noir foot chase, but has always seemed safe. In the afternoon: no cover, no metal detector. Door to the outside sits open, and then you push open a glass door. Walk through narrow passage with men’s room on right and then emerge into main room: Bar with 5-6 stools to immediate right, small, low stage against right wall, some cocktail tables and chairs in front of the stage, and benches against the rear and left walls. Place is small, dingy, and sad. Paid $13 for a vodka tonic. Not bad for Phila. Dancer drinks are the same, but I had one order a $30 high-end cognac on my dime one time.
