Don't Go Out Of Your Way

The Candy Store is on the outskirts of Mobile, about a 15-minute drive from the downtown area where I was staying. I arrived at about 8:30 p.m. on a Monday evening. Admittedly, not usually prime time at any club, but it was particularly depressing at the Candy Store.

On the positive side, it’s next to a major intersection on a main highway with a well lit parking lot. No safety concerns at all in this area. The building is a run of the mill commercial cinderblock building. Nothing fancy, but not a dive either. Actually, it looks pretty nice on the inside. Not fancy, but it looks well maintained. It’s roomy, with an L-shaped bar just inside the door, and a large main stage across from the bar. Strangely, there are some couches sitting at the back of the stage. There is also another room to the right with pool tables and some arcade type games. Who goes to a strip club to play arcade games? A beer at the bar was a reasonable $3.50.

There were two guys standing by the door, but I was waved in with the no cover charge. I found out why when I got inside. There was a dancer on stage when I walked in, and I soon found out she was the only dancer on stage. She looked like an overweight Walmart mom.
