The Vibe at Sugar's is Closest to Pre-COVID in San Antonio
I've been here a few times since the reopen. The first time I walked in was the Saturday after they reopened, which would have been May the 23rd. The last time I went was sometime this week, but I can't remember the exact day. They were doing temperature checks right after reopen, but I did not have to do one the last time I went. Cover is $5 on days. There's still a line outside the door on some nights because they are limiting the number of people in the club. When you walk in the club looks about the same. The tables in the main part of the club were already spaced. The part of the club over by the back side stage has tables a little closer together, but I have seen a crowd over there in the times I've visited. The number of girls on days has been low, 3-5, but there's 1 or 2 girls each shift that are pretty good. Night shift is when their top talent shows up, and one of the visits I stayed a little while and the lineup was solid (8 and up). The interaction is what you'd expect. If a familiar face is around girls are on them immediately, but I've gotten some time with girls I hadn't met before and it was fun. The nightshift vibe at Sugar's is more of a party vibe, and with the restrictions (that the club does try to enforce) I've been avoiding the hassle.
Hassle you say? When you walk in you need to find a table. Or there is also spaced out seating at the upper bar. The lower bar was still blocked off last time I was there, but the high tops between the bar and the main stage were open. There was some stage tipping going on, and the DJ was reminding folks to keep their distance. Customers don't have to wear masks at tables, but did need to have them for entry and were asked to wear them when not seated. This might be changing soon around town, but was the case when I last visited. Dancers and staff are wearing them. On stage dancers don't always have them on, but are supposed to when seated with customers. At the tables with glass tops, along with a paper menu there is also a list of new rules under the glass. Won't list them all, but there are over 15 of them. Basic things are no more than 6 people at a table, exit for the club is out the back through the VIP area with no re-entry, if you see yellow tape stay behind it, and it goes on. It also says there's a 2 hour time limit in the club, but I haven't been there when they had to enforce it to open up space. A lot of the rules are common sense, so it wasn't a big deal. Just a little intense seeing that they took the time to print one up.
Drink and food prices are the same as before. No upcharging and drink specials are still around $5 or $5.50. Plus shot specials they run about once an hour. So all that's good. The stage sets are spaced out a little more if the number of girls is low, which gives them more time to mingle. No dances are happening tableside or anywhere on the main floor. Any socially distanced entertainment is happening in the VIP area, with a staff member back there to keep an eye on things. But it's post-COVID lockdowns and YMWV, so my suggestion is to just go and see for yourself if the current limits work for you. It's typically a $50 upcharge to go the to VIP area at Sugar's, but you can go back and forth the whole visit. If you get quoted something over $50, talk to someone else about it. The dayshift at Rick's opened again this week. Between the two clubs I prefer Rick's, but the vibe is more laid back over there on days. You want a party vibe and DJ hype time? That's going to be Sugar's. I've seen about the same number of girls at both places, and it's a toss up on which girls you'll like better. Until Mens Club gets itself right, I'd put this club and Rick's as the ones to see in San Antonio after the COVID-19 changes.
