Expensive Tuesday Afternoon
I visited Ye Olde Axe last Tuesday afternoon at about 3pm. There was nobody on the door, so I avoided the £5 entrance fee. Inside, the place was almost deserted. There were four dancers and one other customer. Oddly, the music was turned down to the point where it was almost inaudible and the main stage was empty.
One of the dancers approached me before I could even reach the bar. She immediately pressed me for a private dance in what I would guess was a Romanian accent (I think all four dancers were Romanian). I managed to put off her advances until I could at least buy a bottle of beer (£5). She was relentless, so I caved and accepted the invitation for a dance in the back room.
She asked if I wanted a “naughty forty” dance, but given that I didn’t find her particularly attractive, I suggested the standard £20 instead. She made it clear that this would mean less touching would be allowed, but that was fine by me. It was all a bit strange, since the music could not be heard at all back here. Once she was finished, I declined a second dance. She followed me back to the main room and threw a dismissive look to one of her fellow dancers, indicting I wasn’t going to be a good source of cash.
