This isn’t a review as such, but more of a historical narrative on my past experiences at this club in years…decades past.
Well, it has finally happened. Van Buren Township couldn’t do it…the police couldn’t do it…the courts couldn’t do it. A lack of business apparently could. John’s Hot Spot, formerly Legg’s Lounge, has closed its doors. The bar was really only a shell of its former self. Legg’s of old was simply the wildest brothel in the Detroit area, heck, possibly the country!
Let’s be honest, it was a true dive club. If you had access to the basement VIP (or the ultra-covert basement bedroom), everything was available from anyone! This may be true of all clubs now, but Legg’s was the first no holes barred area club. Mondays were the $10 dance day, and the place was packed! Miranda, Melinda, Hailey, Angie, Summer, Angel/Samantha, Claudia, Jasmine, Lynn, Sabrina, and dozens more I cannot remember got their start here! Even the ghastly Ruby from H8S used to work here when she was only in her 30’s and 40’s! It was a free-for-all…well not really! I probably spent $10,000 in there over the years, and met a over a dozen ex-Mrs. Costanza’s there!
It had been dying a slow death for over 15 years, ever since the customer died in the upstairs VIP from an aneurysm while getting dances from Carrie. I happened to be there that day. She often said after the event that she gave “killer dances”… EMTs and cops showed up. An investigation search found nearly a million dollars in a safe in the basement (not the fun basement!). Supposed videos of VIP activities, possibly involving Township officials and cops, were confiscated. I know I had to be in dozens of videos. Prosecutors pressured the girls to roll over on the club, but I’m not sure that any did.
After the guy died, The Township passed ordinances prohibiting exposed nipples and butts. Hamilton’s attorneys really dropped the ball in challenging this ordinance in a timely manner, and the term “Granny Panties” and “Pasties” soon became the club phrases of the day. Then the club had a fire, and reopened as John’s Hot Spot, but it was never close to being the same. The Township ordinances were not going to stop John Hamilton from staying open! He stubbornly fought in court to keep the place open. Sadly, the influx of ugly, fat dancers, no customers and the occasional drive-by shooting all contributed to the place’s downfall. It is sad, but not unexpected.
