Still a good choice in Detroit in spite of recent changes in music and talent
Penthouse has a long standing reputation for having excellent talent albeit with a higher price tag for any extra fun in the private dance area. Based on a recent evening visit, the talent is still good (but not excellent as there were a number of chubby girls dancing on stage) and the prices were still quite high when compared to other Metro Detroit clubs.
However, there has been a recent management change that has implemented a change in the music selection and volume. Now the only music played is hip hop or techno and played at a volume that makes conversation challenging. Music selection is not a big deal but from looking at the clientele, mostly middle aged white business men, and hearing more than one dancer complain about the music, I suspect that this policy change was a bad business decision. In addition, the club now charges a $10 fee for access to the small private dance areas upstairs. If I recall correctly from previous PH visits, a tip for the bouncer was the only fee. The VIP fee is not a big barrier as many of the other Detroit clubs (with some notable exceptions such as Landing Strip and Cricket) also charge a VIP access fee for each visit. Finally, one more minor concern: most of the dancers do tend to hang out with regulars and seldom circulate the floor, even after being tipped on stage.
The comments above focus on relatively minor changes or critiques but they do represent updates on the PH experience that have decreased the value and enjoyment of PH. Nevertheless, in the bigger scheme of things, PH is still a solid choice in Metro Detroit based on the overall quality of dancers but expect to pay top dollar for any fun in the VIP.
