I live near the area and decided to stop in a couple times. It is in a very sketchy part in New Haven, and I'm always fearful of being robbed or something in the parking lot. They do pat everyone entering down, but it does make you feel safer. The entrance fee is high , but the place is usually open till 4 am so sometimes it's the only option.

Once you get inside, it's run down but cozy. The stage isn't bad, but the place is filled with smoke (smoking is allowed). There's no alcohol, but they never pressure you to get a drink, which is cool.

The stage itself is nice, and you're typically in a weird mix of city types and college students (usually foreign), but everyone seems a cool and relaxed.
