Two words best describe toppers: wasted potential.

For those not familiar with Athens, it’s one of those anomalous places where an enormous university occupies what would otherwise be a low-rate cowtown no one would ever have heard of if they weren’t actually from there. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of appreciation for the slow-paced charm and quaint beauty of small southern towns, and Athens rates well in that respect – but those qualities do not a strip club city make. Witness the best Athens can offer: Topper’s.

The club’s full official name is “Topper’s International Showbar.” I’ll grant them Showbar, but “International” falls somewhere on the spectrum between absurdly pretentious and just plain stupid. I suppose the owners wanted the club to seem more “cultured” for the local clientele, but everything about the club is blandly domestic.
