I was on my way to Detroit, and had to stop in Battle Creek for the night. Got a cheap hotel - the Econo Lodge on Capital Ave. It turned out to be fairly shifty joint, I heard a hooker and her john going at it in a room, a couple of drugged out teens sitting on the steps outside, and paper thin walls (I could not only hear the lady next door talking on the phone, but could understand her every word like she was sitting in my bathroom).

I had read reviews on the way up here, and saw some promising ones for Heart Beats. I drove the 10 minute drive down a long dark road to get there from the downtown area. Very nice looking on the outside - well lit, lots of renovations, cool 50s-diner / biker type persona. One the inside, it was a pretty plane, one story, single room strip joint with a single ground level stage and a pole. I think I paid $5 bucks to get in, on the outside it said dress code, but I walked in wearing basketball shorts and a t-shirt, with no problem. Lots of working dudes in the joint, and probably about 6 dancers that I saw. Only one I remember being in decent shape. Lots of moms, loose bellys, heavier set girls, all white and one black. Mostly late 20s to early 30s. I waited about 45 minutes to be approached, and it was the lone black girl. She turned out to be cute, and was in decent shape, so I agreed to go back for a dance.

The dance room had a lot of promise, walled in booths with comfortable sofa chairs. No doors or curtains, but you wouldn't be able to see any activity just walking past the booths.
