Great Entertainers – Abused Scanned Driver’s License Data
One last update. Went to the club during the afternoon yesterday. No scanning of driver's licenses this time. So hopefully that's the end of that!

Great Entertainers – Abused Scanned Driver’s License Data
Sorry I didn’t see this post earlier. It’s good to hear someone else followed-up on this too (especially from my old hometown!). I really liked this place until this event. I also went back and asked about this since then (yeah, afternoons are just better there) and got a similar story, but they still scanned my license. The Bartender (Erin, I think) was also suitably horrified at the whole ordeal. The door guy suggested to me they now periodically delete the non-banned customer's data. The problem is, I’m not convinced these clubs really retain control over this data via the vendors/providers they are using. Bottom line, our privacy is at risk because of this practice, regardless of best intentions. Three out of four of the clubs in the area are doing this though - What a pain!

Interesting thought. My guess is that drivers license data is not protected if you surrender your license for scanning. The state itself can’t disclose it anymore, the Fed Govt can’t disclose the info. SSN is protected and your health data is (HIPPA) is, but info you hand over may not be. Unless, as in the case, the data was provided based on an explicit promise of limited use. I would love to hear of a law that restricts its use, I would definitely report it. Having just googled this I did stumble on to this site. https://www.patronscan.com/id-scanner-for-bars/ Here you can see the kind of software the clubs are using. Scroll down the list of features and you’ll see that it starts out with good intentions and security purposes, but the further you go down the scarier it gets: “ SMS Text Message Marketing”, “Promoter Tracking”, “reports inform you about who your patrons are…Birthday Celebrations”, etc. I had no idea.
