Passed away at 86. He used to be the club owner of Mons Venus in Tampa. Back in the 80s he was in law suit battles with Tampa that eventually reached Florida courts and did a lot to push back against club restrictions. Apparently he also advocated a lot of LGBT and marijuana rights.

Thanks for posting, nicespice. Afaik, his business still owns Mons Venus, but leases it to 2001 Odyssey to run and manage the actual club. I saw him in the club on several occasions, but don't recall seeing him in club post-Covid. An icon for sure.
Definitely a pioneer. I saw him once probably in the early 2000s in the parking lot. Tampa police had done an undercover bust and cleared the club. He arrived to smooth things over. Back in operation within 45 minutes.
Joe and his law suits revolutionized the strip club business in Florida for sure, and possibly, along with the Mitchell Brothers gang in San Francisco, throughout the whole country. When he started his fight, 4ft and 6ft rules were the norm. Joes lawsuits normalized the modern day lap dance and I assume, made him a shit ton of money in the process. In its hey day Mons was a Mecca people traveled from far away to experience. It really was one of a kind. RIP Joe.
Once upon a time, Tampa had the reputation of maybe the best strip club scene in the country. Most of that reputation was because of the Mons Venus. Joe publicly fought city hall in trying to keep the grind in the lap dances at the Mons.
Sounds like a great American and my kind of guy. RIP
Unlike follies... I got to enjoy Mons Venus a couple of times about 14 years ago. I wasn't up to speed yet and I didn't know about follies back then.
Mons and Joe were really at their peak in the mid to late 80s. May other clubs rode Redners success with city hall to make Tampa the leader in strip clubs with heavy grind lap dances. The places in NYC, San Fran, Houston etc. that skirted the law were seedy and in most cases, just straight up seedy brothels the only clubs that I knew of that operated unabashedly without shame were Mitchell Bros in San Fran and Mons Venus in Tampa. And Joe did not have have an ounce of embarrassment about what he built when he would stand in front of city council and invite them all to his Mons. He had by far the most gorgeous woman in the city baring all and I would love to know how he found such a bevy of beauty and then convinced them to do what they did.
Yeah I've seen him at Mons, I appreciate what he did for the strip club world but kind of seemed like scummy guy here's the chair throwing thing m.youtube.com
Eeek, good lord. I can believe it that he was a huge scumbag, and Florida seemed to protect a lot of bad behavior back then. I had no idea about the chair throwing though. I’m surprised he didn’t end up in office at any point, lol
