Passport Stamps

Are there any sure fire ways to avoid a passport stamp? Two years ago when I went, I breezed right through immigration with no stamp but last year the woman working the desk gave me a very unwanted stamp. Luckily, I have a fair number of other stamps and this one is very faint and the date is almost impossible to read.

I am in San Diego later this month and would love to go, but not if it means another stamp. If I get a ride with one of those dudes who hang around San Ysidro does that help? Or the Hk shuttle? I feel like putting $20 in the passport is probably not going to go over well these days.

Any insight is appreciated.

No. And not sure how I would justify getting one.

Just curious, what is the concern? I get if you travel to a dangerous country like Iraq, Iran, Russia and so on.

My question as well, what is the concern? Significant other finding out you crossed over?

"No. And not sure how I would justify getting one." there is no need to justify getting one you pay a small fee and it comes in the mail. If you are concerned about your wife seeing it, it is easier to explain than a stamp in your passport. make sure you get it before your wife sees it. include one when you renew your passport

I use mine as ID to get on planes for domestic flights. When traveling i keep it with me so i don't need to carry my passport around. it makes replacing a lost passport easier. in europe stores will provide forms and receipts to get the VAT refunded at your exit. You need to show your passport at the store. i always show my passport card and have never had it rejected

Yes, passport card is the way to go. It is easy to carry around as proof of citizenship and that may become important if the SAVE act gets pushed through.

If you look remotely like a foreigner having it on your person might keep ICE from beating the crap out of you, or worse! Get a matching set, one for you and one for her. Mother’s Day is right around the corner. 🤪

@623 i agree with you in that a lot of ICE guys are racist or just overall anti immigrant and nationalistic, and they would probably do whatever they could get away with when it comes to handling of immigrants including torturing guys or raping women. But i dont think theyre beating guys up just for looking like foreigners and i dont think theyre going after citizens, at least not yet. If they did that they would be targeting their own base of republicans which includes numerous middle eastern or jewish or latin looking people, plus actual asians jews and other minorities

@rickthehick there are literally hundreds of cases, all well documented, of ICE arresting US citizens and sending them to the concentration camps for days even weeks before things get sorted out. There are several high profile cases where the citizens were detained for months before they could prove their status. And don’t forget of the dozens of incidents where ICE thugs have discharged weapons, the deaths that resulted were US citizens who were fully legal.

@623 perhaps they discharged weapons for a reason, if those citizens attempted to start a fight

Also i havent heard of what youre saying. They have detained permanejt residents yes, i havent heard of citizens being detained

@rickthehick there have been a few hundred documented cases of citizen detentions, and in some cases even deportations of citizens without due process. Many of these are detailed in this bipartisan senate produced report hsgac.senate.gov Not the kind of thing you’ll ever see on Fox News selective coverage but it happens.

Passport card is the way to go ( and also easily attainable )👍🏻

I got a passport card for same reason. It is easier to carry than the passport book as well because it is the size of your normal ID and Sentri card. I mention this because now you could leave you passport book at home and still cross the border so if just by chance a significant other is looking for things in the area where they are stored, it will be right there versus "missing".

The ONLY time that I have used my passport book is when I travel to Thailand. I use my passport card exclusively when I enter Mexico. I don’t even bother carrying my passport book with me.

Just an update for those curious. While the passport card is probably the best option, i didn’t have sufficient time to secure one before my trip. After parking at the usual lot near Jack in the Box, instead of turning right toward the border, I turned left toward the line of waiting cars. The first guy in line offered me a ride for $40, which I accepted. I hopped in the front seat of his late model Jeep. The drive across the border was seamless, you never even stop. 10 minutes later, he dropped me at the HK door. While obviously pricier, it’s definitely a viable option.
