Suppose there was a disease that appeared in children around the age of ten. It causes severe, debilitating depression. There is a medication that will cure it, but it has serious side effects, which are persistent in some cases. There is controversy among experts on the disease as to whether it's best to use the medication, or to treat the depression in other ways. Should the legislature decide which experts are right, and pass a law either requiring or prohibiting use of the medication? Or should the parents of the children with the disease decide whether their child should take the medication or not?

Ilb, you forgot to mention that there could be much controversy about whether it is even a genuine "disease" or simply a product of confusion sewed by whack jobs with social agendas who pose as these kids' trusted adults.
.
When this much controversy exists and the purported trusted adults are doing barbaric and in many cases permanent things to these children, then yes, I support legislative protection for these children. I say that very reluctantly as I do not normally support government getting involved in medical decisions made by parents. But when common sense has completely gone out the window to accommodate controversial junk science fueled by certain groups' social views, something must be done.
.
Sadly the field of psychiatry is particularly prone to falling prey to junk science. Once upon a time lobotomies were a preferred form of treatment for schizophrenia. For many decades, electro shock therapy was a common treatment for a wide variety of mental health ailments. Even as recently as in the 80s and 90s, it was widespread ADHD diagnoses coupled with Ritalin prescriptions for countless school children. The list goes on.
.
As with most of these junk science fads, we eventually learn better. But in this case, the price for waiting for common sense to naturally reassert itself is just too high.

Capitalism is the cause of most depression.
As for the scenario. Medical experts should be trusted when it comes to the safety of medications. Moreso than tinfoil hat wearing right wing nutjobs on a strip club forum

^ Right Icey. Maybe we should go back to lobotomies and electro shock therapy too. After all, the experts should be trusted. 😉

RMD, only one of those fits all the criteria laid out by ilb, including the legislation aspect. Take all the time you need.

One should always apply a common sense filter to any advice given to them by so-called experts, including doctors, lawyers and of course scientists. If it passes on that basis alone then cool. If not, ask questions. If the expert cannot explain it in a way that makes clear sense and/or seems justified given the potential consequences, then step back, do some more research and re-evaluate based upon additional collected information.
.
How many parents who have participated in this barbarity do you think have really done that? My guess is not many. Indeed for many I suspect that this was a welcome path of least resistance. It not only allowed them to avoid all the trials and tribulations of having a teen in puberty, but also let them off the hook for the parts they might have played in their kids' mental health issues.

I concur in having a healthy skepticism of experts. One of my relatives was told by an oncologist she needed dangerous surgery for cancer. She got a second opinion from another oncologist, who correctly told her it was just fat globules. But clearly cancer is a real thing, and treatment of it should not be illegal. For people who are overly self-indulgent, or have some degree of Munchausen's, dubious claims of mental versus physical disorders work best (harder to definitively refute). But I would not go so far as to say that treatments for mental disorders, even dangerous treatments, should be banned for minors. Yes, many, many people make terrible decisions about medical treatment, often on bad advice from "experts". But it's laughable to think that rules made by clowns like MTG and Adam Schiff are the solution to this problem.

There are a million safe antidepressants out there. Use them.
Smoking excessive amounts of weed is associated with psychosis and impaired judgment, especially in the young, as well as STDs caused by lots of other men busting bare loads in your woman's ass, cause a lot of problems too.
Have i yet mentioned that you're not a man if you need your woman to swallow other men's semen to pay your bills?

The proper analogy would be what if you had an anorexic patient who came to you for help losing weight, and you gave them a surgery which would "affirm" but exacerbate the very real physical symptoms and likely shorten their life.
The real remedy for both is "get your child off the fucking internet which fosters their delusions."

Ahh science. Always right. The world is flat = science. The sun revolves around the earth = science. Tomatoes are poisonous = science. The science of Eugenics brought us the Nazi party and extermination of millions. Homosexuality is a mental illness = AMA. Phrenology - you can detrmine a person's valeu and ability by feeling the buymos on their head = science. Wash your groceries to save yourself from Covid = science. Social Distancing is the key = science. Icey you are one sorry excuse for a human being.

I would believe in the scenario only if as OP stated, the medication would actually “cure” the condition causing the depression among kids. I’m not so sure anyone’s really getting “cured” in this scenario - they’re just being given a different set of challenges to deal with.

It's not science, but rather junk science. And we are behind the curve on this, not on the forefront. Many countries that have been indulging this butchery for longer than we have are now pulling back due to concerns over outcomes, including Finland, France, Sweden, Norway and the U.K.
.
When people look back 40 years from now, this will be just another sad chapter in the history of psychiatry that already includes so many other junk science moments. There will also be many parents who will regret the decisions they made for kids too young to fend for themselves.

Oh, and anyone here who doesn't have children really has no clue. None. 10 year olds are often scared and uncertain about too many things to count. They are also highly impressionable. We're talking about 4th and 5th grade elementary school kids here. They are also too young to really know what they might be.
.
So when a 10 year old tells a parent that he/she may be gender confused, it's almost always because someone else introduced the concept to them in the first place.
.
As I can say from experience, the healthiest way to bring a young child through these years is to keep them free from sexual/gender concepts in the first place and just let them be kids. Then puberty happens naturally when they're in middle school and whatever angst they may have over it lessens as the experience demystifies.

^ In other words, keep them off Reddit, Tumblr, and social media.
Ever notice how crazy woke ass celebs like Megan Fox and Charlize Theron have hurr durr "gender diverse" kids? Like, all of them? It's the newest celebrity accessory.
Those kids should be taken away from their parents and put into loving, social media-free families where they can learn how to process their stuff.

Ilb, the study you referenced targeted 97 people treated over a 20 year period. Only 15 of those people even agreed to participate in the interviews and surveys, meaning that for various reasons 82 would not participate. Do you really believe that the other 82 people who refused were all equally happy with their outcomes? If this is your definition of science then you're too stupid to use the term.
.
Oh, and given the time period involved, we can also surmise the most if not all of these folks were adults when they made the decisions to get these procedures done.
.
The NHS in the UK did its own study of children who were subjected to this by grown adults and came to its own conclusions. This is why they stopped it. I dare say that the work they did was far more comprehensive than the drivel that you linked to.
.
Now I will agree that Tucker Carlson Tucker can be an ass at times. But after using that ridiculous "study" to support your theories, he looks like a downright genius compared to you. 😆

The poor children are actually suffering from fucked up progressive parents syndrome.

^ Idk ski. I think in many cases it's simply parents who are just too simple and weak to question what they're being told by "experts" with agendas. In many cases they get to that point because their kids have been struggling with mental health issues and the parents are desperate.
.
Don't get me wrong. I still harbor the strong desire to take a baseball bat to the reproductive organs of parents who actually do this barbaric shit to their 10 year old children. But as a parent myself with children who I've had to help through a variety of difficult issues, I can understand it. Parenting can be hard, especially with kids in the 10-15 year old age bracket.
.
But imagine a world though where we actually have to pass laws to keep school teachers from introducing sexual and gender identity issues to 6 year olds and to prevent parents from starting down this road of permanently mutilating their 10 year olds. SMFH.
.
Oh, it was even more chilling in the UK. A disproportionate % of kids who had this shit done to them were in the custody of Social Services. So decisions for the most vulnerable kids in that population, who naturally had a variety of deep mental health issues due to the circumstances that brought them there in the first place, were being made by unaccountable social workers and administrators who were fully bought into this junk science. Just unreal.

@rickdugan - It just floors me how the Lib Cope Squad here thinks parents, brainwashed by endless propaganda to think a "gender diverse" child is a status symbol, and activists who happen to have medical degrees and profit from sex changes, are fit to make irreversible changes to a child who can't even decide what to have for dinner.
Child abuse--and that's what this is--is not a private matter. These same people want government-sponsored daycare, some even want to banish homeschooling, yet think the state has no business in something like that.
Liberal, woke UK and Scandinavia have woken up to what insanity this is. I hope we all turn the page on this shameful chapter in "medicine."

I'm sure we will eventually, but it's probably going to take time. As you know, medical rules are state-level matters and over half of the states still allow it. Heck a few are even still celebrating the right to mutilate young children.
.
My guess is that this will happen over many years and after many more stories about children who later regret being part of it. And even then, I suspect that places like CA will take a passive-aggressive approach by not banning it completely, but rather raising the bar so high for allowing this that the numbers curtail anyway.
