Have any of you mongers gotten the shits from your visits to TJ. I haven't been to Mexico in about 50 years but it used to be a Major concern to me. I did get it twice. Once in Ensenada south of TJ and once in Acapulco.
My rules became no street vendors and no uncooked foods like salads. I took my chances with ice cubes in my drinks but mostly stayed with bottled drinks.

last commentNever had a problem, and I've been maybe a dozen times in the past 3 years. The only precaution I take is not drinking tap water and not brushing my teeth etc. Regarding ice, I just trust whomever is serving it used purified water to make it.
And I definitely indulge in street vendors - the tacos at the corner of Av. Niños Héroes and Calle Coahuila are absolutely outstanding.
FWIW, I think Mexico 50 years ago is vastly different than it is today. Tijuana, outside of the grittyness of the Zone of Tolerance, is a thriving and hip metropolitan area with lots of commerce and nightlife. I think 50 years ago most of the city probably didn't exist.
I was just in CDMX, and I was almost envious of their infrastructure, much of it new.
I've done hundreds of visits to Tijuana and Zona Norte in the last 10.9 years and no problem. I just don't drink the tap water.
I've eaten at street vendors thousands of times and never caught any norovirus. It was luck because countless times I had swallowed a raw oyster then realized it tasted like it was dead hours ago.
Have had no issues>
I’ve never drank the tap water in TJ. And I can’t say I’ve had issues with the street food. I keep hearing stories about some of the street vendors using dog meat, but I think it’s nothing but urban legend - a tall tale.
In all my years of TJ visits ( including Puerto Nuevo, Rosarito and Ensenada area ), now even once have I ever experienced any issues with the food at either their restaurants or street vendors. But in regards to drinking water in TJ, I only drink bottled water.
Reminds me of a story about some friends who vacationed in Puerto Vallarta several years ago. They did all the right things. No tap water, no ice cubes, used bottled water to brush their teeth.
Then without thinking, they stopped at a Subway in the airport for a quick lunch. They got sicker than a dog for several days - they guessed it was from the lettuce
Just heart burn on last trip but likely just the spice and plan for some otc Prilosec next trip. Shout out to fellow monger @justinyoo for hooking a brother up with some nexium
I wish to add that the Ice I have had in Mexico and also Thailand has been no problem. I have not restricted my intake of ice in the least bit.
I would note: I have gotten the Puta flu from Tijuana before.
But I don't think it had to do with TIjuana specifically, just the fact that I spent a weekend canoodling with like a dozen chicas. I've gotten Puta Flu from SoFLA too.
