While I have never gotten very attached to pets. The only two reasons I could think of to do this to a are: 1} Bites..If it were my dog and it bit for no reason I would not tape its mouth I would put it down and bury it. 2} Continuous barking...if my dog could not be trained not to bark excessively I would simple take it to a shelter and leave it. I fish, hunt and eat meat but there is no reason to make an animal suffer cruelly.
There is a special place in hell reserved for cowardly shitbags who do things like that.

@tiredtraveler: The dog's failures as a pet are your failures as an owner. I have shelled out a couple of grand to train a rescue that I took in over the past year. He bit me, he barked at everything, but now he is nearly perfect. PM if you really want the details, but I believe that when you get a pet you are making a solemn oath to take care if that animal to the full extent of your intellectual, emotional, physical, and financial resources. With that, I have had some of the greatest dogs, and ferrets, anyone has ever had.
