So lets say you have google voice on your iphone for certain "extracurricular" purposes. Someone sends a text to your iphone number and you respond back. But because they're also using google voice, they see your response as coming from your google voice number, leading to questions like, “Hey, Dad, when did you get goggle voice? (Clear as mud?) Any way around this?
By the way, this is a purely hypothetical situation.
Hmm. That's an interesting little tidbit I hadn't encountered before. I don't know that I've ever texted another GV subscriber.
At any rate, in the Voice Settings in your GV account, on the Calls tab, there is setting for "Caller ID (outgoing)". See how that is set and try setting it the other way. I have not tested that setting; it says it only affects texts to other GV users, but I don't know what will happen when text from GV to someone who does *not* have GV.
Seeing as this is a purely hypothetical situation, steve229, I'd pipe in with a solution if I knew one. I sadly don't have Google voice. I don't have an I phone. Is it worth getting one?
vince: If you like what the iPhone has to offer, it is worth it. If you don't, or never expect to use it, then it's not.
Do you or any of your family have any of the iPod family of toys? If so, think of the iPhone as an iPod touch with a phone in it.
For me, it's a phone, an e-book reader, an internet browser, a school room (my company has "associate development" classes online, and they are accessible from my phone), a game machine, a music player, a camera and a movie player. I use all of those functions regularly, so for me, not only is it worth it, I don't know what I ever did with out it. :)
The Android line, BlackBerries, and upcoming Micrsoft Windows Phone 7 all have similar, though not identical, capabilities, some better at some things than others, but all about at the same level.
And it's not necessary to have a smart phone to use Google Voice. Easier, yes, especially for the texting part, but not essential.

Say it was a techie co-worker who prodded you to try it. [Hypothetically speaking of course!]
