I was in Austin the 2nd weekend of October, 2004. We went for one of usual weekends away, which always involves at least one club. This weekend we visited three and Joy of Austin was one I personally visited twice.
I visited about 4 pm on Friday and again about 2 pm on Sunday. Both times were busy enough to not be silly but quiet enough that you could definitely solicit a lady that struck your fancy. I really liked the atmosphere at these times, very relaxed, laid back and cool. There was no cover either time but it was 21 and up and ID was checked. Friday had a buffet but I had just eaten, so I didn't research it at all.
The layout of the club is pretty traditional. There is a main stage which dominates the southern half of the club. It is in a center area which is apparantly the main part of the club. To the west, there is a separated section which features a large bar and an area of tables and booths that apparantly command a cost. To the east, there is a VIP room, which shares a bar with the main room. The VIP room was closed both times I was there, so I don't know the deal on it. The main area has small tables and chairs and two small stages on either side of the back half. The back (north) wall is all booth like couches which are, as one lady showed me, ideal for getting a dance. Technically, they can and will do dances anywhere but if you can head to the back, you want to.
