Atmosphere is a elusive thing at a strip club or any nightclub, for that matter. It can be here on Saturday and gone without a trace on Monday. That was the case when I visited the Sundowner after an absence of a dozen years or so. I found a clean and well-designed club with a friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices, and, for the most part, attractive women on stage, although the "A" team obviously had Monday off. The ingredients were there, but the place was as dead as Elvis.

Following the rule that you don't pick the fashion models for good lapdance action, I accepted the invitations of Pamela, a hefty but superbly endowed brunette, and Mallory, a slim black girl. Both gave good contact for 20 bucks in the very well furnished booths, but it all seemed mechanical. None of the spark that keeps your wallet open just in case something really memorable might happen on the next song.

Is the 'Downer a good club? Definitely. Was I impressed by this visit? No. Will I go back? Sure, especially since I still need to experience the reputedly much raunchier Seductions next door.
