Well, since Arbeeguy had braved the neighborhood, I gave it a go this time around. Actually, approaching from the north this time made the difference, for one didn't get as much of a desolation fell as coming in from the south.
No cover if one arrives between 7:30 (when they open) and 8pm (when all of the dancers (8 on this night) have arrived.) This place was last remodeled around the 1970s or so. The red carpeting surrounding the bar area has several dark splotches (the kind made from gum rubbed in.) Their are diner-type tables around the stage and the same hard chairs Hiphugger has (except here they're (the seat portion) are covered in vinyl. The main room about the stage has about 50 seats-- not very big at all. The ceiling has been lowered, and sports the lightweight foam-type sections typical of offices and family den rooms, only here, no two panels lay perfectly flat in the same manner (adds character I guess.) Lighting is about two or three times stronger than most other clubs... though according to Arbeeguy no one really pays much attention to what's going on (or cares.)
Upon entry I was padded down by the bouncer. The crew of regulars at the bar seemed around 50 for a median age, evenly divided bewteen black and white with the lone young guy being hispanic. Beer is cheap at $2 for a tap-poured beverage, but I was somewhat disconcerted the bartender blew his nose several times before pouring my glass (he was very obviously in the throes of a bad head cold and probably shouldn't have reported to work so that he wouldn't pass his germs around.)
