Jeb Bush-style Low Energy at Hi-Liter
After Sugar 44 and Bourbon St, I was ready to check out the legendary Hi-Liter. I got there at about 1:15 am (they close at 2a) and still had to pay the $10 cover to the lady in the window. I was mad that I left my printed-out free admission coupon in the hotel room.
Hi-Liter seems to be on a random street in a random residential neighborhood with apartments all around. I guess it's been around since the 60's so they're grandfathered in. I parked in the lot to the side and say hi to the gentleman holding the door open who frisks me for "guns and knives". I headed in with only the gun in between my legs.
This place is a dive, but it's got personality. I dug the Halloween decorations all around. It's very lived in. The bar is all along the right wall, tables and chairs in the middle of the room with the stage slightly to the left. Lap dance rooms are just to the left of the entrance. It looks like a prison wall separating the LD area from the main room. There is a group of Gen Z patrons mingling with a couple of dancers right next to the stage. Other than that, it's just me as the customer. I see a trio of girls sitting at a table on their phones and say hi to them. They are all Cuban and speak limited English. None of them seem to think I'm a paying customer so I just walk over to another table. Server comes up and I order a Gingerale since I've already had a few drinks at other clubs and I want to be able to drive back to my hotel. Drink is $3 or $4 I forget. There's a girl half-heartedly dancing on the stage so this place like other AZ clubs doesn't seem to be a stage-tipping kind of joint.
