Inconsistent Services, Inconsistent Pricing, Consistently Fun?
Sugar 44 is a solid neighborhood club that fits into the Phoenix ecosystem somewhere between the value of a Hi Liter/Bandaids and the looks of a Bourbon Street/Le Girls. That is to say, the girls won't be quite as good-looking as the ones at BSC/LG, and not quite as cheap as the ones at HL/BA. However, I think it occupies a happy medium. I don't post many reviews on this site, but when I do they are usually the culmination of several visits to the point where I think I have something to add to the conversation. This is no different and covers ~6 visits over the past several months.
S44 is located at the Thomas/44th St intersection. This constitutes East Phoenix in my opinion since it's still west of Tempe/Scottsdale but then again that's something even we locals can't seem to agree on. S44 is a neighborhood club that's been around for a while, and they have one of the funniest readerboards in town (that's the sign with the different letters that can be arranged). A recent one was "Don't Worry, Coldplay isn't here," which I found quite funny, and they've been doing that for a long time. There's a thin lot on the east side of the building that leads to a larger parking area in the back. This obviously fills up Friday/Saturday evening when the club is at its busiest, but there's also a McDonalds and Wells Fargo next door with plenty of parking. I'll sometimes hit the Wells Fargo ATM and walk over (avoiding any ridiculous ATM fees inside). I believe the cover is $12, but it might be $10. This only applies after 7pm. I'm more of an early evening guy so I never have to worry about it. Also, since I always get asked this question, they do NOT scan IDs. Upon entering, there's a bar where many of the patrons and workers seem to endlessly hang out. There's a 1-drink minimum (not consistently enforced), so I'll cough up $5 for a water bottle most of the time. To the left of the bar, there's a larger room with a stage in the center and tables/chairs surrounding it. The walls are lined with booth-style seats and the VIP section is off to the right, but separated by a large wall from the main area. In its totality, the club is fairly small and maybe only slightly larger than an average-sized classroom.
Most of the time, there's probably 6-10 girls working, but that number will double if it's a Friday/Saturday evening. That's really the only time the club gets busy, as its resting state is mostly empty on the floor with patrons and dancers grouped up at the bar. In terms of the ladies, there's a pretty even split between white, AA, and latina, and I've even seen 2 Asian dancers (more on that later). Body types range from thick to spinner with the majority (80%) falling under the spinner category. I've read complaints about the selection in previous reviews, but that hasn't been the case during my visits as most fall in the 6-8 range, with the occasional 9. Dancers perform the standard 2-song set on stage, with the second song being topless most of the time. As I mentioned previously, the floor is usually pretty empty with a single patron every other table during most hours. The girls will occasionally make rounds asking for dances, but I've noticed that they often get hung up at the bar for excessively long periods of time. If a dancer who caught my eye ends up there for too long, I'll usually just go over and ask for a dance as long as they're not engaging with one of the other PL’s at the bar, and they're usually happy to oblige. This might be a non-starter for people who prefer to sit back and get approached after scoping things out, since the circulation is inconsistent. Speaking of inconsistencies, the stage will sometimes go empty for several songs at a time without explanation, even when there are dancers not working and people seated on the floor.
