Have been going for to the Matador on and off for thirty years. Stopped by around 10 six months ago and it was a shadow of its former self. Never been much more than a local hangout with an injection of young military from the adjoining Eglin AFB. They are so close they share a property line.
But it had changed. Low energy. Ten or so girls working. All of them would not have made the cut at any other local club. It was always described as the bar strippers went to retire. That was not a hundred percent true because the majority of the girls had always been young, fun, and danced nude.
Two days ago I went by late afternoon. I would describe the club, which had never been outstanding, as it was closed. There were stacks of boxes and chairs on the front porch that looked like they had been there sometime. I hope it was only going to be a temporary situation for the owner and the customer. The club has provided hours of fun for the airman stationed next door. For years they entertained locals and visitors alike with a friendly and fun environment.
Much like Trader Johns was in Pensacola, Fl. that was a part of the Naval Aviation community, the Matador was to the Air Force community. Thanks Fred and Jimmy.
